Lesson summary

This lesson focuses on keeping our immediate environment—our classroom and school compound—clean and safe. In Ghana, we value our communities and know that a clean place is a healthy and happy place. Just as we bath and wash our hands to keep our bodies healthy, we must also clean our surroundings to prevent sickness from germs and to avoid accidents like slipping or tripping. This lesson will teach our young learners practical ways they can help make their school a better place for everyone.

Lesson notes

This section provides the core knowledge for the teacher to deliver. Use a friendly and interactive tone.

Concept 1: What is a "Clean" and "Dirty" Environment? Explanation: A clean environment is a place that is neat, tidy, and free from dirt and germs. A dirty environment is a place that is messy, has rubbish lying around, and can make us sick. Teacher's Talk: "My dear children, look around our classroom. When it is clean, where are our books? (On the shelf). Where is the rubbish? (In the bin). The floor is clear, and we feel happy and ready to learn. This is a clean environment. Now, imagine we throw banana peels on the floor, tear paper and leave it everywhere, and our bags are scattered. Flies will come, we might step on the peel and fall, and the room will smell bad. This is a dirty environment. A dirty place has germs that can make us cough, have a running stomach, or feel sick." Teaching Aid: Use two large pictures or drawings on a chart paper/cardboard. Picture A (Clean): Shows a tidy classroom with books on shelves, a clean floor, chairs neatly arranged, and an empty rubbish bin in the corner. Picture B (Dirty): Shows the same classroom but with papers on the floor, a spilled drink, toys scattered around, and an overflowing rubbish bin with flies.

Concept 2: Tools for Cleaning Our Environment Explanation: We use special tools to help us clean. These tools make the work easier and more effective. Teacher's Talk: "To make our classroom and school compound clean, we need some helpers. These helpers are our cleaning tools! Let's name them." Broom (Praeɛ): "We use the broom to sweep away dust and dirt from the floor." (Mime sweeping). Dustpan (Dɔte Sɔfɔ): "After sweeping, we use the dustpan to collect the dirt." (Mime scooping dirt). Rubbish Bin: "This is the 'house' for all our rubbish. We must always put our rubbish here so it doesn't make our classroom dirty." (Point to the class bin). Duster/Rag: "We use a duster or a small cloth to wipe dust off our tables and shelves to make them shiny and clean." (Mime wiping a table).

Concept 3: Actions to Keep Our Environment Clean and Safe Explanation: Keeping our environment clean is not just the work of the teacher or the cleaner; every child can help in small ways. Teacher's Talk: "You are all super helpers! What can you do to keep our classroom clean and safe?" Pick up Litter: "If you see a piece of paper or a sweet wrapper on the floor, what should you do? Yes! Pick it up and put it in the rubbish bin." Put Things Away: "After playing with blocks or crayons, we must put them back where they belong. This keeps the room tidy and stops others from tripping over them." Wipe Spills: "If you spill a little water, tell me or Auntie so we can wipe it quickly. A wet floor is slippery and dangerous." Sweep and Tidy: "We can help to sweep small areas and arrange our chairs and tables properly."
