Organised sports and physical activity participation means taking part in planned, rule-based activities such as football, netball, volleyball, handball, basketball, athletics, table tennis, and school fitness clubs. In Ghana, these activities support health, teamwork, discipline, and talent development (school teams, inter-schools, district sports festivals). At JHS3, learners must go beyond “just playing” to apply movement concepts, principles, and strategies—so they can perform better, stay safe, include everyone, and organise fair competitions.
A. Meaning of “Movement Concepts, Principles, and Strategies” Movement concepts = “What we think about when moving” (space, time, effort/force, relationships). Movement principles = “Rules of the body and physics that make movement effective and safe” (balance, stability, leverage, follow-through, weight transfer). Strategies = “Plans used to solve game problems” (how to attack/defend, how to create chances, how to stop opponents).
These are applied especially in hand and ball sports (football, handball, basketball, netball, volleyball).
B. Movement Concepts (with Ghanaian examples) 1) Space (Where to move) Personal space: space around your body (e.g., controlling the ball close to your feet in football). General space: space in the playing area (e.g., moving into open space to receive a pass).
Example (football): If you stand behind a defender, you are “hidden.” If you move to the side into open space, you become a passing option.
