Lesson summary

Energy makes things happen: it cooks our food, powers our phones, moves vehicles, pumps water, and keeps our bodies alive. In Ghana, energy is often limited or costly (electricity bills, fuel prices, “dumsor” experiences, charcoal and firewood use). Conserving energy means using energy wisely to reduce waste while still meeting our needs. It saves money, protects the environment, and helps Ghana use its energy resources sustainably.

Lesson notes

A. Meaning of Energy Conservation (Two Related Ideas) 1) Scientific Law: Conservation of Energy Law of conservation of energy: *Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be converted from one form to another.* Example: When you switch on an electric iron, electrical energy changes into heat energy. The energy is not lost; it changes form (some useful heat, some wasted heat to the surroundings). 2) Everyday Meaning: Energy Conservation (Saving Energy) Energy conservation (saving energy): *Using energy efficiently and avoiding waste so that we use less energy to do the same work.* Example: Turning off lights when not needed, using energy-saving bulbs, ironing clothes in batches, or using a pressure cooker to reduce cooking time.

> Important: The indicator focuses on explaining the importance of conserving energy (saving energy) for life, society, and the environment.

B. Why Energy Conservation is Important (Step-by-step reasoning) 1) Saves Money for Individuals and Families Electricity and fuel cost money. If we waste energy, we pay more. Conserving energy reduces: Monthly ECG bills Money spent on petrol/diesel for generators Money spent on charcoal, firewood, and LPG
