In today's Ghana, social media is everywhere. From the WhatsApp group for our class assignments to watching funny skits on TikTok and seeing what our favourite musicians are doing on Instagram, it has become a major part of our daily lives. While these platforms are powerful tools for connecting, learning, and having fun, they also come with dangers that every young person must be aware of. This lesson will equip you with the knowledge to use social media wisely, helping you to enjoy its benefits while protecting yourself from its risks. Understanding this is crucial for being a responsible digital citizen.
A. What is Social Media?
Definition: Social media refers to websites and mobile applications (apps) designed to allow people to create, share, and exchange information, ideas, pictures, and videos in virtual communities and networks.
In simple terms, it's a way for people to talk to each other, share their lives, and see what others are doing using the internet.
Key Characteristics: User-Created Content: The users (like you and me) provide most of the content (posts, photos, videos). Networking: It helps you connect with friends, family, and people with similar interests. Interactive: You don't just consume information; you can comment, like, share, and create.
