Performance objectives

Lesson summary

Animal production is an important part of Ghana’s agriculture. Many homes keep poultry (chicken), small ruminants (goats, sheep), pigs, rabbits, and sometimes fish. The success of these animals depends greatly on feeding—the right feed ingredients in the right amounts, mixed and prepared correctly. When learners understand feed ingredients and methods of preparation, they can help families reduce costs, improve animal growth, increase egg/meat/milk production, and prevent disease caused by poor feeding.

Lesson notes

A. Key Terms Animal production: Rearing animals for food and other products (meat, eggs, milk, manure, hides). Feed: Any material eaten by animals to provide nutrients for growth, energy, reproduction and health. Feed ingredients: Materials used to make feed (e.g., maize, bran, fishmeal). Ration: The amount of feed given to an animal in 24 hours. Balanced diet (balanced ration): Feed that contains the right amounts of nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, fats/oils, vitamins, minerals, and water. Concentrates: High-nutrient feeds like grains and protein meals (maize, soybean meal, fishmeal). Roughages: High-fibre feeds like grasses, hay, crop residues (important for goats/sheep/cattle). Mash: Ground and mixed feed (common for poultry). Pellets: Feed compressed into small cylinders (common for fish and poultry in commercial farms). B. Nutrients and What They Do (Simple Science Link) Energy feeds (carbohydrates/fats): maize, cassava peels, wheat bran → provide energy for movement and growth. Protein feeds: fishmeal, soybean meal, groundnut cake → build muscles, feathers, eggs, milk. Minerals: oyster shell, limestone, salt, bone meal → strong bones, eggshell formation, body functions. Vitamins: premix, green leaves → immunity, growth, reproduction. Water: essential for digestion and temperature control. C. Common Feed Ingredients in Ghana (By Category) Energy sources Maize (corn) Wheat bran Rice bran Cassava meal / dried cassava peels Sorghum (where available)

Protein sources Fishmeal (or dried ground fish) Soybean meal Groundnut cake Blood meal (where safe and properly processed) Maggot meal (in some modern farms)

Mineral sources Oyster shell (for layers) Limestone Bone meal Common salt (small amounts)

Vitamins Vitamin-mineral premix (commercial) Green leafy vegetables (for some animals)
