Organised sports and physical activity participation means taking part in planned games, competitions, clubs, and exercise sessions with rules, roles, and safety procedures. In Ghana, learners meet organised sports in school (inter-house sports, PE lessons, school teams), community (colts football, athletics clubs), and cultural settings (traditional games and festivals). Learning how to apply movement concepts, principles, and strategies helps learners perform skills better, stay safe, include everyone (including learners with different abilities), and work confidently in teams.
A. Meaning of Organised Sports and Physical Activity Participation Organised sports are structured physical activities with: Rules (how to play, scoring, fouls) Officials/leadership (teacher, captain, referee) Planned time and space (field/court, timetable) Equipment (ball, cones, bibs, whistles) Safety procedures (warm-up, hydration, first aid)
Physical activity participation includes organised sports and other planned activities like aerobics, jogging clubs, skipping sessions, dance practice, and fitness circuits.
Why it matters: Health: improves heart fitness, strength, flexibility, healthy weight Skills: better movement control and sport performance Character: discipline, respect, leadership Social: teamwork, inclusion, communication Safety: knowing correct technique reduces injuries
B. Movement Concepts (What to think about when moving) Movement concepts help learners perform skills correctly and efficiently. Balance – keeping the body stable (e.g., landing after a jump). *Example:* In netball shooting, feet shoulder-width, knees slightly bent, body upright. Coordination – using body parts together smoothly. *Example:* In football passing, eyes look at target, non-kicking foot beside ball, kicking foot swings through. Force (Power control) – how hard/soft you apply strength. *Example:* A short pass needs light force; a long pass needs more force. Timing – doing the movement at the right moment. *Example:* In catching, hands move to meet the ball at the right time. Space awareness – knowing where you and others are positioned. *Example:* In a small-sided game, move into open space to receive a pass. Direction and pathways – moving forward/backward/sideways; straight/curved/zigzag. *Example:* Dodging a defender uses curved or zigzag pathways.
