Organised sports and physical activity participation means taking part in planned games, exercises, and competitions that have rules, roles, and safety procedures (e.g., school inter-house sports, community football, athletics, netball, volleyball, handball). In Ghana, many learners join school teams, play in community parks, or take part in cultural and recreational activities. To perform well and stay safe, learners must apply movement concepts, principles, and strategies—that is, understand *how the body moves*, *why certain techniques work*, and *what decisions to make during play*.
A. Meaning of Organised Sports and Physical Activity Participation Organised sports/physical activity: planned physical activities with: Rules (what is allowed/not allowed), Officials/leadership (teacher/coach/captain/referee), Teams/roles (defender, attacker, goalkeeper, captain), Safety measures (warm-up, proper space, fair play).
Examples in Ghana: School inter-house athletics (100 m, relay, long jump) School football/netball/volleyball competitions Community keep-fit clubs, aerobics, jogging groups Traditional games with rules (e.g., *ampe* competitions)
B. Movement Concepts (What to think about when moving) Movement concepts help learners understand *how* to move effectively. 1) Space (Where you move) Personal space: space around your body (e.g., stretching without hitting others). General space: shared space (e.g., football pitch, volleyball court). Directions/levels: Forward/backward, sideways, diagonal High/medium/low levels (jumping, running, crouching)
Example (football/netball): An attacker moves into open space to receive a pass. A defender stays between the attacker and the goal (good use of space). 2) Time (When/How fast you move) Speed: fast vs slow movement Timing: doing the right action at the right moment (e.g., jumping to head a ball, intercepting a pass)
