Welcome, learners! Every day, we cut and shape things around us. At home, our parents cut yam or plantain for fufu, and a seamstress cuts fabric to sew our beautiful school uniforms. A carpenter cuts wood to make our classroom desks. All these activities require special tools to be done correctly, safely, and beautifully. In this lesson, we will explore the different tools used for cutting and shaping materials in various workshops like the kitchen, sewing room, and wood workshop. Understanding the right tool for the right job is the first step to becoming a skilled artisan and creating amazing products.
Before we look at the tools, let's understand two key words: Cutting: This is the process of dividing a material into two or more pieces, or removing a part of a material, often using a sharp-edged tool. Think of slicing bread or sawing wood. Shaping: This is the process of changing the form or outline of a material. Shaping can involve cutting, but it also includes moulding, bending, smoothing, or pressing. Think of moulding banku into a ball or using sandpaper to smoothen the edge of a piece of wood.
Now, let's explore the tools used in different work areas. A. In the Food Laboratory (Kitchen)
Here, we work with food items. The tools are designed to be hygienic and efficient.
| Tool Name | Image/Drawing | Type | Function and Explanation | Safety Tip | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Chef's Knife | (Drawing of a large, triangular-bladed knife) | Cutting | This is an all-purpose knife used for chopping, slicing, and dicing vegetables, meat, and fruits. Its size gives you control for bigger tasks. | Always cut on a chopping board and keep your fingers curled inwards, away from the blade. | | Vegetable Peeler | (Drawing of a peeler) | Cutting | Used to remove the outer skin of vegetables and fruits like carrots, cassava, and mangoes. It removes a very thin layer, reducing waste. | Always peel away from your body. | | Rolling Pin | (Drawing of a cylindrical rolling pin) | Shaping | Used to flatten dough for pastries, biscuits, or bread. It applies even pressure to create a uniform thickness. | Sprinkle flour on the surface to prevent the dough from sticking. | | Biscuit Cutter | (Drawing of round/star-shaped cutters) | Shaping/Cutting | A tool used to press into flattened dough to create uniform shapes for biscuits or cookies. It both cuts the outline and gives the shape. | Press down firmly and lift straight up for a clean cut. | B. In the Sewing/Textiles Workshop
