Lesson summary

Physical fitness helps learners in Ghana to be strong for daily life activities such as walking long distances, carrying school bags, helping at home, playing games, and staying healthy. In JHS, many learners sit for long hours in class and at home, so muscular strength and endurance activities help prevent tiredness, improve posture, reduce risk of lifestyle diseases, and support better performance in sports and school work. This lesson focuses on participating in safe strength and endurance activities and setting goals and recording progress (as NaCCA expects).

Lesson notes

A. Meaning of Physical Fitness Physical fitness is the ability of the body to work efficiently and effectively, enjoy leisure, and handle daily tasks without getting overly tired.

Physical fitness has many components, but today we focus on: Muscular strength Muscular endurance B. Muscular Strength (Definition + Examples) Muscular strength is the ability of a muscle (or group of muscles) to exert a maximum force in a single effort or a few efforts.

Simple examples in Ghanaian context: Lifting a bucket of water once from the ground to the head. Carrying a bag of rice for a short distance. Doing a few strong push-ups.

How it is trained: Fewer repetitions (e.g., 4–8 reps) with more effort/resistance Longer rest between sets C. Muscular Endurance (Definition + Examples) Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle (or group of muscles) to perform repeated movements or hold a position for a long time without getting tired.
