Lesson summary

Organised sports and physical activity participation means taking part in planned, rule-based activities such as athletics, football, netball, handball, volleyball, and school fitness clubs. In Ghana, learners meet these activities in school sports, inter-house competitions, community games, and recreational events. Learning how to apply movement concepts, principles, and strategies helps learners to: perform skills safely and effectively, improve performance through pacing and technique, include everyone (including learners with different abilities), work well in teams and organise fair competitions.

A. Meaning of Organised Sports and Physical Activity Participation Organised sports are structured physical activities with: rules, roles (officials, captains, timekeepers), planned sessions (training, competition), measurable outcomes (time, distance, scores).

Examples in JHS: inter-class athletics, inter-house sports, school football team training, fitness club sessions.

Why it matters: It builds fitness, discipline, teamwork, leadership, and reduces lifestyle diseases. It can also open opportunities for scholarships and community recognition.

B. Movement Concepts (What we think about when we move) Movement concepts help learners understand *how* and *why* movements work. 1) Space (Where the body moves) Direction: forward, backward, sideways Pathways: straight, curved, zigzag Levels: low, medium, high Personal space vs general space: avoiding collisions in group activities
