Disease prevention and management is not only about taking medicine when we are sick; it is also about daily choices that keep our bodies strong and reduce our risk of getting diseases such as malaria, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and some infections. One powerful prevention tool that every JHS learner can practise is regular physical activity. In Ghana, many learners sit for long hours in class, at home watching TV, or using phones. This lesson helps learners explore and catalogue several ways of getting active, and to self-assess how often they participate in different activities, as stated in the indicator.
A. Meaning of Disease Prevention and Management Disease prevention: Actions we take to stop diseases before they start (e.g., exercising, eating well, sleeping well, washing hands, using mosquito nets). Disease management: Actions we take to control a disease and reduce its effects after it has started (e.g., taking prescribed medicine, attending clinic reviews, exercising safely for diabetes/hypertension, avoiding triggers).
Physical activity supports both prevention and management.
B. What is Physical Activity? Physical activity is any movement of the body that uses energy (calories). Examples: brisk walking, sweeping, playing football, dancing, skipping, cycling.
Exercise is planned physical activity done to improve fitness (e.g., jogging 20 minutes, doing sit-ups in sets).
