Traditional rhythmic gymnastics, games and dance are important parts of Ghanaian life. They help learners to stay physically active, build friendships, learn cooperation and respect, and preserve culture from different regions. In this lesson, learners will focus on socio-relational traditional games—games that mainly build social relationships through teamwork, communication, turn-taking, trust, fairness and inclusion. Indicator alignment (B8.2.1.1.1): Learners will classify socio-relational traditional games and perform them safely with adaptations.
A. Meaning of Key Terms 1) Traditional rhythmic gymnastics, games and dance These are indigenous Ghanaian movement activities that involve: Rhythm (clapping, drumming, chanting, stepping patterns) Coordinated body movements (balance, timing, agility) Cultural rules and meanings (community values, respect, teamwork) 2) Socio-relational traditional games These are traditional games that mainly develop social relationships and interpersonal skills such as: Cooperation and teamwork Communication (calling, responding, signalling) Trust and empathy Turn-taking and fairness Inclusion and respect for others
Important note: Many games develop physical fitness too, but socio-relational games are identified by their strong focus on group interaction and relationship-building.
B. How to Classify Traditional Games (Simple Criteria)
To classify a game as socio-relational, check if it has most of these features: Group-based play: players work in pairs/teams or in a circle. Communication is necessary: calling names, chanting, clapping, responding, negotiating. Cooperation is required: success depends on helping each other, not only individual strength. Rules promote fairness: turn-taking, agreed boundaries, respectful conduct. Encourages inclusion: can be adapted for different abilities and mixed genders.
