Lesson summary

This lesson introduces the concept of a "design brief," which is the starting point for any successful design project. In Ghana, from the tailor sewing a beautiful Kente cloth outfit to the carpenter building a strong wooden chair, or even a caterer planning a new menu, every creator starts with a clear set of instructions and goals. A design brief is simply a formal way of writing down these instructions. Understanding how to read and use a design brief is the first step in learning how to solve problems creatively and make useful products that people will love. It is a fundamental skill for anyone who wants to become an innovator, an entrepreneur, or a skilled craftsperson.

Lesson notes

What is a Design Brief?

A Design Brief is a written document or a set of instructions for a design project. It is developed by the person or company who wants the product (the client) to guide the designer.

Think of it like this: If your mother asks you to go to the market, she gives you instructions: "Go to Makola Market, buy two olonka of rice and one tin of tomatoes. Use only 50 cedis and come back before lunch." Those instructions are a simple, verbal design brief! They tell you: The task: Buy groceries. The items: Rice and tomatoes. The constraints: A budget of GH₵50 and a time limit (before lunch). The client: Your mother.

In technology and design, we write this down to make sure everyone understands the project perfectly. The main purpose of a design brief is to ensure that the designer and the client agree on the goals and limitations of the project before any work begins. This prevents misunderstandings and wasted effort. Key Components of a Design Brief
