This lesson introduces learners to the concept of finding the area of a triangle. Area is a measure of the space inside a two-dimensional shape. Understanding how to calculate the area of a triangle is a fundamental skill in geometry with many practical applications in our daily lives. In Ghana, this knowledge is useful in fields like farming (measuring irregular plots of land), construction (designing roofs), art (creating patterns in fabrics like Kente), and even simple tailoring. We will build upon our previous knowledge of rectangles to discover a simple and powerful formula for calculating the area of any triangle.
A. What is Area?
Area is the amount of surface a two-dimensional (flat) shape covers. We measure area in "square units." For example, if we are measuring a small shape, we might use square centimetres (cm²). If we are measuring a room or a plot of land, we would use square metres (m²). Imagine you are covering your exercise book with small square pieces of paper with no gaps or overlaps. The number of squares you use is the area of the book's cover. B. The Link Between Rectangles and Triangles
