Organised sports and physical activity participation means taking part in planned physical activities with rules, roles, and safety measures—such as school sports, inter-house competitions, community games, and club activities. In Ghana, these activities help learners build fitness, discipline, teamwork, confidence, and leadership. They also reduce lifestyle diseases (e.g., obesity, hypertension) and promote social inclusion—so that girls, learners with disabilities, and less-skilled learners can participate meaningfully.
A. Meaning of Organised Sports and Physical Activity Participation Organised sports/physical activity is participation in physical activities that have: Structure (planned warm-up, main activity, cool-down) Rules (what is allowed/not allowed) Roles (captain, timekeeper, referee, recorder) Safety measures (space, equipment checks, no dangerous contact) Goals (skill improvement, fitness, teamwork, enjoyment)
Examples in Ghana: School: inter-house athletics, football, netball, table tennis Community: boxing gyms, taekwondo clubs, keep-fit groups, “jama” aerobics Traditional games: ampe (organised with rules and teams), pilolo (organised with boundaries)
B. Movement Concepts (How we move) Movement concepts help learners understand and control movement. Space (Where you move) Personal space: your own area without touching others. General space: shared area (e.g., school field). Direction: forward, backward, sideways, diagonal. Level: low (bent knees), medium, high. Pathway: straight, curved, zigzag.
Example (Martial art stepping): Step forward in a straight pathway, maintain personal space (arm’s length from partner), keep medium level with knees slightly bent. Dynamics/Effort (How strong/fast you move) Speed: slow → fast Force: light → strong (but controlled) Flow: smooth/continuous vs. sudden/stop-start
