Plants are a major part of our environment. In Ghana, plants provide food (maize, cassava, plantain), medicine (neem, moringa), building materials (timber, bamboo), shade and beauty. Understanding the different types of plants helps learners to: identify plants in their community and school compound, understand why some plants grow well in certain places (e.g., dry areas vs wet areas), appreciate how plants support humans and animals in different landforms (plains, valleys, mountains, plateaus).
A. Meaning of “Types of Plants” A type of plant is a group of plants that share similar visible features such as: height/size, stem nature (woody or soft), growth habit (upright, creeping, climbing), lifespan (annual, biennial, perennial).
In JHS1, we commonly classify plants by growth form (habit): Trees Shrubs Herbs Climbers (creepers/vines) Grasses (Optional but useful) Aquatic plants and succulents (special groups based on habitat/adaptation)
B. Types of Plants (Descriptions + Ghanaian Examples) 1) Trees Definition: Large plants with a single main woody stem (trunk). They usually have branches high above the ground and live for many years.
Key features Tall (often above 3–5 m and can be much taller) Strong, woody trunk Long lifespan (perennial)
