This lesson introduces learners to the fundamental concept of data. In our daily lives in Ghana, we are surrounded by information: the favourite food of our classmates, the number of goals scored by our favourite football teams, or the types of vehicles that pass by our school gate. Often, this information is messy and confusing. Today, we will learn a powerful skill: how to collect this information through a survey, and then how to neatly organise it into tables. This skill helps us to understand information clearly, make better decisions, and see patterns we might have missed.
A. What is Data?
Data is simply a collection of information, facts, or figures. It can be numbers, words, or observations. When we first collect data, it is usually unorganised and looks like a random list. This is called raw data. Example of Raw Data: Imagine we ask 10 classmates their favourite fruit. The list of answers we get is raw data: > `Orange, Mango, Banana, Orange, Pineapple, Mango, Orange, Banana, Orange, Mango`
This list is hard to read quickly. How many people chose Orange? We have to count them one by one. This is where organising data becomes useful.
Organised data is raw data that has been arranged in a neat and meaningful way, often in a table, so that it is easy to understand and interpret. B. What is a Survey?
