This lesson focuses on a very powerful skill: solving maths problems in our heads (mental maths). In our daily lives in Ghana, from the market to the trotro station, we often don't have a calculator or pen and paper. Being able to quickly calculate costs, change, and quantities mentally makes us faster, more confident, and helps us make sure we are being treated fairly. Today, we will learn and practise specific strategies to turn our brains into fast and reliable calculators, especially for solving everyday word problems involving whole numbers and decimals.
Mental maths is not about magic; it's about using smart tricks to make calculations easier. We will learn three main strategies today. Strategy 1: Compensation (Rounding and Adjusting) This is very useful for addition and subtraction. The idea is to change one of the numbers to a "friendly" number (usually a multiple of 10), do the easy calculation, and then adjust your answer to fix the change you made.
