Nutrition and physical activity are closely linked. In Ghana, many learners play football, athletics, ampe, basketball, netball, traditional games, and also do chores like fetching water or sweeping. To perform well and stay healthy, the body needs the right nutrients from food. Some nutrients give energy for movement, some build muscles for strength, and some protect and repair the body so we don’t fall sick easily or get injured often. This lesson focuses on food nutrients that influence sports and physical activity, using familiar Ghanaian foods.
A. Meaning of Nutrition and Physical Activity Nutrition: The process of taking in food and using it for energy, growth, repair, and health. Physical activity: Any body movement that uses energy (sports, exercise, walking, chores, dancing).
Important idea: When you are active, your body uses more energy and water, and your muscles need more repair. So the quality of your diet affects your performance.
B. Food Nutrients That Influence Sports and Physical Activity Food nutrients are substances in food that the body needs. The main ones that affect sports are: Carbohydrates (Energy-giving foods) Proteins (Body-building foods) Fats and oils (Concentrated energy + support functions) Vitamins and minerals (Protection, repair, body regulation) Water (Hydration and body regulation) Fibre/Roughage (Digestion and health support)
> Note: Fibre does not directly “give energy” like carbohydrates, but it supports good digestion and overall health, which helps an active person.
