This lesson explores the multiplication of fractions and percentages. We often need to find a part *of* a quantity in our daily lives. For example, when the market woman gives you a "quarter of" a bag of oranges, or when a shop offers a "10% discount" on a shirt, you are dealing with fractions and percentages of numbers. Understanding how to calculate these values is a very important skill for managing money, sharing items fairly, and solving everyday problems. Today, we will learn the mathematical process behind the word "of," which is multiplication.
This topic can be broken down into three main ideas. Let's tackle them one by one. Concept 1: The Meaning of "Of"
In mathematics, especially when working with fractions and percentages, the word "of" almost always means to multiply (×). "Find `1/2` of 10" means "Calculate `1/2` × 10". "What is 25% of GH₵ 80?" means "Calculate 25% × GH₵ 80".
Thinking of "of" as "multiply" is the key to solving all the problems in this lesson.
Concept 2: Multiplying a Fraction by a Whole Number
