Good day, learners. Today, we are going to build on our knowledge of fractions and decimals. Think about your daily life. When you share a loaf of sugar bread with your siblings, you are using fractions. When you buy waakye and get change from the seller, you are using decimals (Cedis and pesewas). Being able to add and subtract these numbers is a very important skill for everyday activities like cooking, shopping, and even in jobs like carpentry and fashion design. This lesson will empower you to solve real-world problems confidently using mathematics.
This lesson is divided into two main parts: working with fractions and working with decimals. Let's tackle them one by one. Part 1: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
A. Quick Recap: Proper Fraction: The numerator is smaller than the denominator (e.g., ½, ¾). It's less than one whole. Improper Fraction: The numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator (e.g., ⁵/₄, ³/₂). It's one whole or more. Mixed Fraction (or Mixed Number): A whole number and a proper fraction combined (e.g., 1 ½, 3 ¼).
B. Adding/Subtracting Fractions with the SAME Denominator (Like Denominators) This is the simplest case. If the denominators are the same, you just add or subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator. Example 1 (Addition): Kofi ate ³/₈ of a pie, and Ama ate ²/₈ of the same pie. What fraction of the pie did they eat altogether? Solution: ³/₈ + ²/₈ = (3+2)/8 = ⁵/₈. Answer: They ate ⁵/₈ of the pie altogether. Example 2 (Subtraction): A farmer planted ⁷/₁₀ of his land with maize. Due to poor weather, ³/₁₀ of the planted area did not grow. What fraction of the land had maize? Solution: ⁷/₁₀ - ³/₁₀ = (7-3)/10 = ⁴/₁₀. Simplify: We can simplify ⁴/₁₀ by dividing both numerator and denominator by 2. ⁴/₁₀ = ²/₅. Answer: ²/₅ of the land had maize.
C. Adding/Subtracting Fractions with DIFFERENT Denominators (Unlike Denominators) You cannot add or subtract fractions directly if their denominators are different. You must first make them the same!
