Lesson summary

In JHS, learners take part in games (football, ampe, athletics), chores (sweeping, fetching water), and school activities (cadet, cleaning, practical lessons). Injuries can happen at home, on the field, in the classroom, or on the road. Knowing how to prevent injuries and how to give simple first aid helps learners to protect themselves and others, reduce pain, avoid complications (like infection), and know when to call an adult/health worker. This lesson focuses on preventive understanding: identifying risks, applying safety rules, and choosing correct first-aid actions for common sports/physical activity injuries.

Lesson notes

A. Meaning of First Aid First aid is the immediate care given to a person who is injured or suddenly ill before professional medical help arrives. Aims of First Aid (Simple “3 Ps” + more) Preserve life (prevent death). Prevent the condition from getting worse (stop bleeding, prevent shock). Promote recovery (comfort, proper positioning). Other aims: Relieve pain Prevent infection Get help quickly (refer to clinic/hospital)

B. Injury Prevention (Main focus of the indicator) Injury prevention means taking steps to avoid injuries or reduce their severity. Why injuries happen in sports/physical activity (Risk factors) Poor warm-up or no stretching → muscles not ready. Wrong technique (e.g., landing badly after a jump). Unsafe environment (stones on field, wet floor, broken goal post). Improper footwear/clothing (slippers, tight shoes, no shin guards). Overtraining/fatigue (playing too long without rest). Dehydration and poor nutrition (causes cramps, dizziness). Rough play / ignoring rules (tackling dangerously). Poor supervision (no teacher/coach control). Preventive measures (Before–During–After) Before activity Medical readiness: report asthma, sickle cell issues, injuries, dizziness. Warm-up (5–10 minutes): light jogging, dynamic stretches. Check equipment: balls, nets, goal posts stable; remove sharp objects. Proper dressing: sports shoes, socks, shin guards (for football), comfortable clothing. Hydration: drink water before starting. Plan and rules: teacher explains rules and safety signals.

During activity Use correct technique (how to fall, how to tackle safely). Follow rules and fair play; avoid dangerous play. Take water breaks; rest when tired. Stop when pain occurs; do not “play through” serious pain. Safe spacing: avoid overcrowding during drills.

After activity Cool down: slow walking + gentle stretching. Rehydrate and eat well (water, fruits, balanced meal). Report injuries early; treat small wounds to prevent infection. Clean and store equipment properly.
