Lesson summary

This lesson introduces the fundamental relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages. These three concepts are simply different ways of representing parts of a whole. In our daily lives in Ghana, we encounter them constantly—from calculating a discount on a pair of shoes at the market, to sharing food with family, to understanding our scores on a class test. Mastering these conversions is a crucial skill for everyday problem-solving and for more advanced mathematics.

Introduction: Three Ways to Say the Same Thing Imagine you have a big loaf of 'bofrot'. If you cut it into 4 equal pieces and eat one piece, you have eaten a part of the whole loaf. We can describe this part in three ways: As a Fraction: You ate 1/4 of the bofrot. (1 part out of 4 total parts). As a Decimal: You ate 0.25 of the bofrot. As a Percentage: You ate 25% of the bofrot.

All three—1/4, 0.25, and 25%—represent the exact same amount. Today, we will learn how to move between these forms. A. Converting a Fraction to a Decimal The rule is simple: Divide the numerator by the denominator. The line in a fraction (vinculum) literally means 'divide by'.

Example 1: Convert 3/4 to a decimal. Meaning: This means 3 divided by 4 (3 ÷ 4). Calculation (Long Division): Since 4 cannot go into 3, we add a decimal point and a zero. ``` 0.75 _______ 4 | 3.00 0 ---- 3 0 (Bring down 0) 2 8 (4 x 7 = 28) ---- 20 (Bring down another 0) 20 (4 x 5 = 20) ---- 0 ``` Answer: So, 3/4 = 0.75.

Example 2: Convert 2/5 to a decimal. Meaning: This means 2 divided by 5 (2 ÷ 5). Calculation: ``` 0.4 ______ 5 | 2.0 0 ---- 2 0 2 0 (5 x 4 = 20) ---- 0 ``` Answer: So, 2/5 = 0.4. B. Converting a Fraction to a Percentage There are two main methods for this.
