The internet is like a very big library with millions of books, videos, and pictures. If you want to find one specific piece of information, you can't just look through everything! We need a special tool to help us, just like a librarian helps us find a book in a real library. This tool is called a search engine. Learning how to use a search engine properly is a very important skill. It helps us with our school projects, lets us learn new things on our own (like how to cook *waakye* or the history of the *Adinkra* symbols), and helps us find answers to our questions quickly and safely.
A. What is a Search Engine?
A search engine is a special website that helps you find information on the World Wide Web. Think of it as the internet's librarian. You go to the search engine website, type in a question or a few important words about what you are looking for, and the search engine gives you a list of other websites, videos, and images that might have the answer.
How does it work? (Simple Explanation) Search engines use computer programs called 'spiders' or 'bots' that are always moving around the internet. They 'read' billions of web pages and create a massive, organised list, like the index at the back of a textbook. This list is called an index. When you search for something, the search engine quickly looks through its index to find the most helpful and relevant results for you.
Popular Search Engines: While there are many, the most common ones you will see are: Google: The most popular search engine in the world. Bing: Created by Microsoft. Yahoo!: Another popular search engine. DuckDuckGo: A search engine that focuses on protecting your privacy. B. How to Search Effectively: Using Keywords
