This lesson introduces the concept of 'Space Awareness'. Understanding how we use space is very important for moving safely and effectively in our daily lives. Whether we are playing ampe with friends, walking through a busy market like Kejetia, or playing football on the school field, knowing about our personal space and the general space around us helps prevent accidents and allows us to move with skill and confidence. We will explore how to move in different ways within the space we have.
This lesson is about Space Awareness, which means understanding the area around you and how your body moves in it. We will break it down into four main ideas: Space, Directions, Levels, and Pathways. Personal Space vs. General Space Personal Space: This is the invisible "bubble" of space immediately around your body. It's your own space, and no one should enter it without your permission. How to feel it: Stand still and stretch your arms out wide to the front, sides, and back. If you can do this without touching anyone or anything, you are in your own personal space. Think of it as your own little "compound". Example: When you are sitting at your desk in class, the area of your chair and desk is your personal space. General Space: This is the total area that everyone can share and move in. It is all the space outside of everyone's personal space. How to see it: Look around the field or the classroom. All the empty space where you can run, walk, or play is the general space. Example: The entire football pitch is a general space, but when a defender marks a striker very closely, they are challenging their personal space. Directions
Directions describe the way our body moves through space. The main directions are: Forward: Moving towards the front. (e.g., Walking to the front of the class). Backward: Moving towards the back, without turning around. (e.g., Taking a few steps back carefully). Sideways: Moving to the left or right side. (e.g., Like a crab walking on the beach). Upward/Downward: Moving towards the sky or towards the ground. (e.g., Jumping up, squatting down). Levels
Levels describe the height of our body as we move. There are three main levels: High Level: Your body is stretched up tall, towards the ceiling or sky. Examples: Reaching up to pick a mango from a tall tree, jumping high to head a football, standing on your tiptoes. Medium Level: This is your normal body height when you are standing or walking. Most of our daily movements happen at this level. Examples: Walking to school, jogging, playing ampe, passing a football. Low Level: Your body is close to the ground. Examples: Crawling like a baby, squatting down, rolling on the grass, doing a crab walk. Pathways
A pathway is the imaginary line or route you follow as you move through the general space. Straight Pathway: Moving from one point to another without any curves or turns. Example: Running a 100-meter sprint on a track. The line is straight. Curved Pathway: Moving in a gentle, rounded line. Example: Running around a circle during a warm-up, or the path of a ball when you "bend" it in football. Zigzag Pathway: Moving in a series of sharp turns from side to side. Example: Dribbling a football around cones or defenders, or running away from someone in a game of 'chaskele' (tag).
