Mathematics Lesson Note: B3 - Data Collection and Interpretation Overview and Learning Objectives Data is all around us! Think about counting the number of mangoes in your basket, tracking the scores in a football match, or knowing which type of fufu is most popular in your class. Understanding how to collect and interpret data helps us make better decisions and understand the world around us. In this lesson, we will learn how to collect simple data, organize it, and use it to answer questions.

Lesson notes

Data: Data is information collected about something. This information can be numbers, words, or even pictures. Examples of data include the number of students who like football, the colors of cars in the school parking lot, or the types of fruits sold at the market. Data Collection: This is the process of gathering information. We can collect data by asking questions (surveys), observing things (counting), or looking at records. Tally Chart: A tally chart is a simple way to record data using tally marks. Each tally mark represents one item. For example, |||| means 4 items, and \H means 5 items. Table: A table is a way to organize data in rows and columns. It helps us to see the data clearly and easily. Chart: A chart is a visual representation of data. Charts like bar charts and picture graphs help us to quickly understand patterns in the data. Most Frequent: The "most frequent" item is the item that appears the most times in the data. It is the item with the highest count.

Worked Examples:

Example 1: Favourite Fruits

Let's say we want to find out which fruit is the most popular among students in your class. Data Collection: We ask each student their favourite fruit and record the answers. Let's say we get the following responses: Mango: 8 students Orange: 5 students Pineapple: 3 students Banana: 6 students Table: We can organize this data in a table:
