Welcome, class! Today, we're going to learn about forces and energy. Forces help us move things and change how things are. Energy is what gives us the ability to do work, like lifting a stone or running. Understanding forces and energy will help us understand how things work around us, like how the wind blows leaves or how a car moves. It also helps us be safe, like knowing not to push someone too hard.
What is a Force?
A force is anything that can make something move, stop moving, change direction, or change shape. We use force all the time without even thinking about it! Push: A push is when we move something away from us. Examples: Pushing a chair across the floor. Pushing a swing to make it go higher. Pushing a door open. Pull: A pull is when we move something closer to us. Examples: Pulling a rope in a tug-of-war game. Pulling a drawer open. Pulling a cart or wagon. Gravity: A force that pulls everything towards the ground. That's why if you drop something, it falls down, not up!
What is Energy?
Energy is what allows us to do work. It is what makes things move, work, or grow. We need energy to do everything! Examples of activities that need energy: Running and playing games: Our bodies need energy from food to move. Studying and reading: Our brains need energy to think. The sun shining: The sun has energy that gives us light and warmth. Cooking food: We need energy from fire or electricity to cook.
