Mathematics Lesson Note: B1 Grade 1 - Geometry and Measurement Overview and Learning Objectives Greetings, Class One! Today, we are going to explore Geometry and Measurement. This means we will be learning about shapes all around us and how to compare the sizes of things! It's important because understanding shapes and sizes helps us in many ways – from playing games to building houses (when you grow up!) and even helping your mother in the market!
a) Shapes: Circle: A round shape with no corners and no straight lines. Think of the sun, a football, or your school plate. Square: A shape with four equal sides and four corners that are all the same. Think of a biscuit or the top of a stool. Triangle: A shape with three sides and three corners. Think of a slice of watermelon or the roof of a house. Rectangle: A shape with four sides. Two sides are long and two sides are short. All four corners are the same. Think of a blackboard or a door.
b) Length:
Length tells us how long something is. We can compare the lengths of two things by putting them side by side. Longer: Means something has more length. Imagine your teacher's table is longer than your desk. Shorter: Means something has less length. Imagine your pencil is shorter than your teacher's ruler.
Example: We have a book and a pencil. We put them side-by-side on the table. The book stretches further along the table than the pencil. So, we say the book is *longer* than the pencil. The pencil is *shorter* than the book.
