Objective: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able

  1. Define/know the work of the military.
  2. Know the equipment/weapons used in the military.
  3. Know the different ranks in the Nigerians armed forces.

Content

The work of the military of a nation is to protect and defend the nation from external forces. The military is also called “Armed forces” which include:

 

  • The Army: responsible for defending the country against enemy forces in the territorial land boundaries.
  • The Navy: responsible for protecting the nation against enemy forces on the sea and waterways.
  • The Air force: responsible to protect the country’s airspace against the enemy forces.

 

To have a vocation in the military, one needs to study the profession by attending Nigeria Defense Academy. Alternatively, one can apply directly to a particular arm of the military when vacancy is advertised.

Popularly, one who joins the Army is called a soldier, one who joins the Navy is either a “Blue Jacket” or a “Sailor Boy”.
