Bead making

Objective: At the end of the lesson pupils should be able to:

  2. Know the purpose of bead making
  3. Know the materials used for bead making

Content

Bead making is a form of art whereby glass or clay is fired with a hole in it, to make beautiful jewellery. It is also the act of arranging beads into different designs to form necklaces, bracelets, crowns, ankle chains, rings, earrings etc. Beads come in different shapes and sizes, which determine the kind of designs that are produced from them.

Uses of Beads

Beads are used to produce the following

  1. Bags            b) Crowns        c) Necklaces
  1. Hand bands        e) Shoes        f) Blouses
  1. Table mats        h) Decoration    s    i) prayer beads

The process of producing beads

  1. Pound or knead raw clay
  2. Cut and roll the clay into small ball like shapes
  3. Allow the clay to dry a bit and use a sharp tool to create designs on the clay. Also use a needle to form a hole at the centre of the clay balls (the hole must be big enough for a string to pass through)
  4. Allow the clay to dry a bit more then bake it. To make it stronger, remove the clay from the fire, apply glaze to it then bake it again.

Purpose of bead making

  1. Financial: beads can be made  to be traded for money
  2. Social: beads can be used as an ornament
  3. Cultural: beads can be worn for peculiar festivals or occasions.
  4. Spiritual: it is used by catholics, muslims or “Ifa” priests for different religious rituals.

Materials used for bead making

  1. Straws                6) Pliers
  2. Holders            7) Ropes
  3. Seeds                8) Baked clay
  4. Fishing lines            9) Needles
  5. Stoppers            10) Clips

Presentation:

Step I: Teacher revises previous lesson with pupils

Step II: Teacher introduces and explain new topic to pupils

Step III: Pupils are allowed to ask questions

Step IV: Teacher writes note on the boards for pupils

Conclusion: Teacher moves round for inspection, marking and correction of notes where necessary.
