Previous knowledge: Pupils are familiar with Nationalism and Patriotism.

Objective: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Define citizenship
  2. Define naturalism
  3. Give reasons why foreigners live in our country.

Content

Citizenship is the state of being a citizen or member of a country and accepting responsibilities and duties that accompany it.

Naturalization is the process by which a person willingly becomes a citizen of another country by applying to the immigration department of the country of his/her choice.

Reasons why foreigners live in our country

  1. Tourism: people visit interesting and memorable sites in other countries for leisure, education etc.
  2. Economic reasons
  3. Evangelism
  4. Vocation
  5. Political reasons
  6. Educational reasons

Advantages of foreigners in Nigeria

  1. It promotes economic development
  2. It encourages international co-operation
  3. It encourages educational opportunities
  4. It facilitates evangelism

Disadvantages of foreigners in Nigeria

  1. Criminal activities
  2. Unemployment
  3. Exploitation
  4. Negative cultural influences.

Conditions necessary for becoming a Nigerian citizen

  1. They must be patriotic to the nation.
  2. They must not be fraudsters, dupes and cheats.
  3. They must be save and sound adults with good means of livelihood.
  4. They must be familiar with the culture of Nigeria.
  5. They must not have criminal records in their countries of origin.

Presentation:

Step I: Teacher revises previous lesson with pupils

Step II: Teacher introduces and explain new topic to pupils

Step III: Pupils are allowed to ask questions

Step IV: Teacher writes note on the boards for pupils

Evaluation:

  1. What is naturalization
  2. Who is a foreigner?
  3. What is citizenship?
  4. List four advantages of having foreigners in Nigeria.�

Conclusion: Teacher moves round for inspection, marking and correction of notes where necessary.
