Objective: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to know that agriculture plays a vital role in the development of a country.

Content

Agriculture serves as a major source of food to any citizen of a country. The crop plants which may be consumed are the leafy part and the fruity part. The crops that are produced and animals that are reared serve as sources of food to human beings

Agricultural crops are classified into two, which are;�

  1. Food crops: these are crops that are cultivated by farmers mainly for eating or consumption. These food crops are cultivated on a small scale and these type of farming is known as subsistence farming. Examples are rice, yam, maize, beans, sweet potato.
  2. Cash crop: these are crops which are mainly produced for sale. The crops grown by farmers on a large scale so as to make money. Some of these crops may be exported to other countries that are in need of it. Examples are cocoa, rubber, cotton and soon.�

Because nations depend on agriculture not only for food. But for national income and raw materials for industry, as well, trade in agriculture is a constant international concern.

Agriculture also helps to create job opportunities for human beings around the world. Some of these jobs are:

  1. Hunting
  2. Fishing
  3. Farming
  4. Gardening
  5. Livestock rearing

Step III: Pupils are allowed to ask questions

Step IV: Teacher writes note on the boards for pupils

Evaluation:

  1. Define agriculture
  2. What is subsistence farming?
  3. Give the two classification of crops

Conclusion: Teacher moves round for inspection, marking and correction of notes where necessary.
