Objective: At the end of the lesson pupils should to:

  1. Define peace
  2. Name the characteristics of tolerance
  3. State the things we must do in order to bring about national unity

Content

Peace is a situation or period when there is mutual love, friendliness and calmness in our homes, schools churches/mosques and in the society at large. A peaceful home or nation is where there is no violence, war, conflict, protest, riot or hatred. Absence of peace in our homes bringsabout crises in our society. There are certain qualities that encourage peaceful co – existence in our society. They are tolerance, co – operation, humility, forgiveness, moderation, honesty, patriotism, self control etc.

Components of peace

For us to promote and sustain peace in the society, we need to strengthen the components of peace which include:

  1. Tolerance: this is the acceptance of other people’s opinion and differences. A tolerant person has these characteristics
  1. Respect
  2. Ability to show forgiveness
  3. Extending hospitality to strangers
  4. Willingness to make peace between who are
  5. Willingness to show love to relations, friends and neighbor
  1. Co – operation: this means working together in a group in order to achieve a common goal.
  2. National unity: this is a situation where citizens of a country develop strong sense of love for one another and passion for the nation.

Things we must do to promote national unity

  1. Respect our national symbols
  2. Promote the rule of law
  3. Adopt an official language
  4. Use common currency
  5. Emphasise the things that binds us and strengthen our national unity.

Presentation:

Step I: Teacher revises previous lesson with pupils

Step II: Teacher introduces and explains new topic to pupils

Step III: Pupils are allowed to ask questions

Step IV: Teacher writes notes on the board for pupils.

Evaluation:

  1. What is peace?
  2. What is national unity?
  3. State four ways in which we can promote peace in Nigeria.

Conclusion: Teacher move round for inspection, marking and correction of notes where necessary.
