Objective: At the end of the lesson pupils should be able to;

  1. Identify essential drugs
  2. Know habit forming drugs

Content

There are many chemicals that are needed by the body. We need to be careful to use them according to our doctor’s prescriptions.

Essential drugs: are drugs that are needed by man for his well being;

  1. They are needed for staying healthy
  2. They can cure diseases
  3. They are presents in nutritional supplements

Examples include:  a) Painkiller like panadol, Aspirin

            b)Vitamin supplements

  1.     c) Cough medicine e.g coflin

            d)Drugs to cure malaria e.g Amalar

  1.     e) Drugs for curing bacteria infections: Antibiotics, like penicillin, ampicillin
  2.     f) Fever relieving drugs: Paracetamol

Excessive or abnormal use of drugs

At times, people take certain drugs repeatedly because they derive satisfaction from them. They form the habits of taking them regularly. Drugs taken in this manner are known as Habit forming drugs. They should be avoided because they can unknowingly harm the body or may cause death.

Presentation:

Step I: Teacher revises lesson with pupils on drugs

Step II: Teacher introduces and explains new topic to pupils on drugs

Step III:Pupils are allowed to ask questions

Step IV: Teacher writes notes on the board for pupils

Evaluation:

  1. When does the use of drugs become abnormal?
  2. What are Habit forming Drugs?
  3. List five examples of essential drugs

Conclusion: Teacher moves round for inspection, marking and correction of notes where necessary.
