Definition of Agriculture

Objective: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to define Agriculture.

Content

Agriculture may be defined as the planting of crops, and the rearing of animal for the benefits of man. It may also be defined as the processing and storage of farm produce and also the selling of plant and animal product. Agriculture is obtained from two Greek words which are “ager” and “culture”. Ager means field while culture means cultivation.

The most important crops which are cereals such as wheat, rice, barley, corn and rye; sugarcane: meat animals such as sheep, cattle, goats and pigs or swine’s; poultry such as chickens, ducks and turkeys; animal products such as milk, cheese, and eggs. Fruits, vegetables and olives are also major food for people.

Agricultural income may also be derived from non-food crop such as rubber, fibre plants, tobacco and oil seeds as well as animals raised for pelts (animal skin)

Presentation:

Step 1: Teacher revises previous lesson with pupils

Step 2: Teacher introduces and explains new topic to pupils

Step 3:Pupils are allowed to ask questions

Step 4: Teacher writes note on the board for pupils.

Evaluation:

  1. Define Agriculture
  2. Give two examples each of cereal crops and meat animals.

Conclusion: Teacher moves round for inspection, marking and correction of notes where necessary.
