This week, we'll be diving into the exciting world of measurement! We'll be focusing on area, surface area, and volume. These are not just abstract mathematical concepts; they are essential for understanding the world around us. Imagine you are helping your family plan a garden. Knowing about area will help you decide how much space you need to plant your vegetables. If you are wrapping a present for a friend, you need to consider the surface area to ensure you have enough wrapping paper. If you are calculating how much water a container can hold, you are using volume.
Area: Area is the amount of two-dimensional space a shape occupies. Think of it as the amount of paint you would need to cover a surface. We measure area in square units, such as square millimeters (mm²), square centimeters (cm²), square meters (m²), and square kilometers (km²).
Square: All sides are equal. Area = side x side = side² Rectangle: Two pairs of equal sides. Area = length x width Triangle: Area = ½ x base x height. The 'height' is the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite vertex (corner).
