Lesson summary

This week, we will be focusing on making responsible decisions about money. In South Africa, understanding how to manage money is incredibly important. Many families face financial challenges, and learning these skills now will help you make informed choices as you grow older, leading to a more secure future. This includes understanding the value of money, how to budget, saving habits, and avoiding unnecessary debt. Making good financial decisions will empower you to achieve your dreams and contribute positively to your community. Think about it – saving for school trips, buying your own textbooks, or even helping your family – all require responsible money management.

Lesson notes

2.1 Understanding Money and its Value: Money is a medium of exchange; it represents value and allows us to obtain goods and services. In South Africa, we use the Rand (ZAR). Understanding its value means knowing how much things cost and whether something is a good deal or not. Think about the cost of bread, milk, or a taxi ride – these are everyday items that represent the value of money in our lives. Inflation (rising prices) is also an important concept. If something costs more today than it did yesterday, that's inflation. 2.2 Needs vs.

Wants: It’s crucial to distinguish between needs and wants.

Needs: These are essential for survival and well-being. Examples include food, water, shelter, clothing, and basic healthcare. Needs MUST be met.

Wants: These are things we desire but are not essential for survival. Examples include sweets, toys, video games, and the latest fashion items. Wants are nice to have, but we can often live without them.
