Lesson summary

Hello Grade 4 mathematicians! This week, we're diving into the exciting world of measurement! Measurement is all around us, and it helps us understand and describe the world better. Imagine you're helping your mom bake a cake, building a Lego castle, or even just figuring out if you have enough space to park your bicycle. All of these activities involve measurement! We'll be focusing on three important types of measurement: length (how long something is), mass (how heavy something is), and capacity (how much something can hold). These skills are vital not just in school, but in your everyday lives as South African citizens.

Lesson notes

Let's explore each type of measurement in detail: a)

Length: Length is how long something is. We use different units to measure length depending on the size of the object.

Millimeter (mm): The smallest unit we'll use. Think of the thickness of a fingernail or a very small ant.

Centimeter (cm): A bit bigger. There are 10 millimeters in 1 centimeter (1 cm = 10 mm). Think of the width of your pinky finger.

Meter (m): A larger unit. There are 100 centimeters in 1 meter (1 m = 100 cm). Think of the height of a small child.

Kilometer (km): The largest unit. There are 1000 meters in 1 kilometer (1 km = 1000 m). Think of the distance between two towns.

Tools for measuring length: Rulers (for cm and mm), meter sticks (for meters), and measuring tapes (for longer distances in meters and cm).
