This week, we are focusing on Healthy Eating Habits. Understanding what it means to eat healthily is extremely important for all of you. South Africa faces many health challenges, and making good food choices can help you grow strong, stay healthy, and have the energy you need to learn and play. Eating the right foods helps prevent illnesses and ensures you have the best chance to succeed in school and enjoy life. This topic is especially important in a country like ours, where access to healthy food isn’t always easy. We need to learn to make the best choices we can with what we have available.
What are Food Groups? Food groups are categories of foods that have similar nutritional properties. Eating a variety of foods from different food groups helps us get all the nutrients our bodies need to grow and stay healthy.
The main food groups are: Fruits and Vegetables: These are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Vitamins and minerals help our bodies work properly and fight off illness. Fibre helps us digest our food. Examples include apples, bananas, oranges, spinach, carrots, and tomatoes. In South Africa, we also have delicious options like mangoes, guavas, and papayas. Why are they important?* They give us energy, make our skin healthy, and help us fight sickness.
Grains (Carbohydrates): These provide us with energy to run, play, and learn. Choose whole grains whenever possible as they have more fibre. Examples include bread, rice, pasta, maize (mealie meal), and oats. Why are they important?* They give us the fuel to do everything we need to do during the day.
Protein: This helps build and repair our body tissues. Protein is essential for growing strong muscles and bones. Examples include meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and nuts. We have plenty of affordable protein options in South Africa like beans and lentils. Why are they important?* They are the building blocks for our bodies, helping us grow and repair.
Dairy: Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yoghurt are rich in calcium, which is important for strong bones and teeth. Why are they important?* They keep our bones strong so we can run, jump, and play without getting hurt.
Balanced Diet: A balanced diet means eating the right amount of each food group to stay healthy. A balanced plate should ideally consist of half fruits and vegetables, one-quarter grains, and one-quarter protein. It’s also important to include some dairy products. This ensures we get all the necessary nutrients without overeating unhealthy fats or sugars.
Example:* Imagine you have a plate of food. A good balance would be half the plate filled with a colourful salad (lettuce, tomatoes, carrots), one quarter with pap (maize porridge), and one quarter with grilled chicken or beans.
Healthy Eating Habits: Eat regular meals: Don't skip breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Skipping meals can make you feel tired and lead to unhealthy snacking later.
Eat slowly and chew your food well: This helps with digestion and makes you feel full sooner.
Drink plenty of water: Water helps our bodies work properly and keeps us hydrated, especially in the South African heat. Aim for at least 6-8 glasses of water each day.
Choose healthy snacks: Instead of chips and sweets, opt for fruits, vegetables, or nuts.
Unhealthy Food Choices: Unhealthy foods are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. These foods can lead to weight gain, tooth decay, and other health problems.
Examples include: Sweets and chocolates: High in sugar, which can damage your teeth.
Chips and fried foods: High in unhealthy fats and salt.
Sugary drinks (sodas and juices): High in sugar and provide very few nutrients. Why are they bad for us?* They can make us feel tired, gain weight, and get sick more easily.
Question: Sarah eats a packet of chips and a soda for lunch every day. Is this a healthy lunch? Why or why not?
Solution: No, this is not a healthy lunch. Chips are high in unhealthy fats and salt, and soda is high in sugar. This lunch lacks essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and protein. It would be better for Sarah to have a sandwich with whole-wheat bread, chicken, lettuce, and tomato, along with an apple and a bottle of water.
Question: Sipho feels tired and weak all the time. What could be a reason for this and what changes could he make to his diet?
Solution: Sipho could be feeling tired and weak because he is not eating a balanced diet. He may not be getting enough essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and protein. He could try eating more fruits, vegetables, and protein, and fewer sugary and fatty foods. Drinking more water could also help.

Solution: Mary could include:
A whole-wheat sandwich with peanut butter and banana (carbohydrates and protein).
