This week, we delve into the crucial aspects of system and network performance, security, and backups. In today's interconnected world, where our lives are increasingly reliant on technology, understanding these concepts is not just a theoretical exercise; it's essential for protecting our data, ensuring efficient operations, and maintaining a secure digital environment. Imagine a small business in Soweto using a point-of-sale system that constantly crashes due to poor performance, or a student in Durban whose university application gets hacked because of weak security measures, or a family in Cape Town who loses all their precious photos and documents because they didn't back them up.
2.1 System Performance System performance refers to the efficiency with which a computer system or network executes tasks. Slow performance can be incredibly frustrating, reducing productivity and impacting overall efficiency. Factors influencing system performance include: Hardware Limitations: The processor (CPU), memory (RAM), hard drive (HDD or SSD), and graphics card (GPU) are crucial components. A slow processor or insufficient RAM can significantly bottleneck performance. An older HDD is much slower than a modern SS
D. Software Bloat: Excessive software installations, unnecessary background processes, and poorly optimized applications consume system resources, leading to sluggish performance.
Operating System: The operating system itself can impact performance. Keeping the OS updated is vital for performance enhancements and security patches.
Network Congestion: In a network environment, excessive traffic can lead to slow data transfer speeds and network lag.
Disk Fragmentation: Over time, files become fragmented on the hard drive, making it slower for the system to access them.
