This week, we begin our exploration of Measurement, a crucial branch of mathematics that deals with quantifying the size, length, area, volume, and other properties of objects. Measurement is fundamental to everyday life, from cooking and construction to sports and medicine. Understanding measurement allows us to make informed decisions and solve practical problems. In South Africa, accurate measurement is vital for fair trade, infrastructure development, land surveying, and numerous other sectors contributing to our economy and well-being. In this context, understanding errors and units becomes vital.
2.1 Units of Measurement: We use different units to measure different quantities.
Length: Common units include millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), kilometers (km).
Area: Common units include square millimeters (mm²), square centimeters (cm²), square meters (m²), hectares (ha), square kilometers (km²). (1 ha = 10 000 m²)
Volume: Common units include cubic millimeters (mm³), cubic centimeters (cm³), cubic meters (m³), milliliters (mL), liters (L). (1 L = 1000 cm³ = 1000 mL)
Conversion Factors: Knowing the conversion factors between units is crucial.
For example: 1 cm = 10 mm 1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm 1 km = 1000 m 1 m² = (100 cm)² = 10 000 cm² 1 m³ = (100 cm)³ = 1 000 000 cm³
