NOTE

NEO-COLONIALISM AND POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT

Neo-colonialism refers to the continued economic, political, and cultural influence exerted by former colonial powers over their former colonies or regions they once dominated. In the realm of political development, neo-colonialism often manifests in the form of indirect control or manipulation of governments by external forces, typically through economic pressure, military intervention, or support for client regimes.

Neo-Colonialism and Economic Under-Development

Economically, neo-colonialism contributes to under-development in former colonies by perpetuating unequal trade relationships, resource exploitation, and dependency on former colonial powers or other dominant nations. These unequal economic arrangements often result in the extraction of resources at low prices, limited industrialization, and the perpetuation of poverty and underdevelopment. Furthermore, multinational corporations from former colonial powers often wield significant influence in the economies of these countries, exacerbating economic disparities and hindering local development efforts.

Unequal Development within States and Instability

Within neo-colonial states, the legacy of colonialism often results in unequal development between regions or ethnic groups, exacerbating social and economic disparities and fueling instability. The concentration of economic power and resources in the hands of a privileged few, often aligned with external interests, marginalizes large segments of the population and breeds resentment and conflict. This unequal development can manifest in various forms, including regional disparities in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and access to resources, further entrenching social divisions and hindering national cohesion and stability.
