NOTE

DIGNITY OF LABOUR
A. The Obligation to Work

  • Work is an essential part of life and should be approached with dignity. The Bible teaches that work is not a curse but a blessing and an obligation that everyone should engage in.
  • Scriptures to Study:
    • Thessalonians 3:6-15: Paul stresses the importance of working and not being idle.
    • Colossians 3:23-25: Whatever we do, we should do it heartily as if working for the Lord.
    • Ephesians 6:5-8: Instructions on how servants should work as unto the Lord, not as men-pleasers.
    • Titus 3:1: Reminding us to be obedient and ready for every good work.

B. Different Types of Labour

  • Physical Labour: Involving physical work, such as farming, construction, etc.
  • Intellectual Labour: Includes mental work, teaching, writing, and research.
  • Spiritual Labour: Serving God in ministry, prayer, and evangelism.
  • Creative Labour: Activities involving artistic or skillful work, such as design, music, and craftsmanship.

C. Jesus as the Carpenter's Son

  • Jesus worked as a carpenter, which highlights the value of manual labour. He was not exempt from working with His hands, and this shows that there is dignity in every kind of work.
  • Scripture Reference: Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3.

D. The Apostles as Fishermen

  • The Apostles were fishermen by trade before they became disciples of Jesus. Jesus called them while they were at work, and they followed Him, showing that God values all kinds of work.
  • Scripture Reference: John 21:1-8.

E. Skill Acquisition, Empowerment, and Creativity

  • Skill acquisition is the process of learning a trade or skill that empowers a person to provide for themselves and contribute to society.
  • Empowerment comes from gaining the knowledge and tools to succeed in one's field of work.
  • Creativity is the ability to come up with new and innovative ideas that improve or create new products and services.
  • Every person has the potential to develop a skill or talent that can be used for personal growth and the benefit of society.
