Rights of a Consumer

  1. Right to Safety: Consumers have the right to be protected against goods and services that are hazardous to their health or safety.
  2. Right to Information: Consumers have the right to be informed about the accurate details of products and services, including their ingredients, usage, potential risks, and benefits.
  3. Right to Choose: Consumers have the right to choose from a variety of products and services at competitive prices, with the assurance of quality and performance.
  4. Right to Redress: Consumers have the right to seek compensation, replacement, or refunds for goods and services that do not meet the agreed-upon standards or are defective.
  5. Right to Consumer Education: Consumers have the right to access information and resources that enable them to make informed decisions and effectively assert their rights in the marketplace.

Agencies responsible for consumer education

In Nigeria, three prominent government agencies responsible for consumer education and protection are:

  1. Consumer Protection Council (CPC): The CPC is tasked with protecting and educating consumers on their rights and responsibilities. They investigate consumer complaints, enforce consumer protection laws, and provide information to the public to promote consumer awareness and empowerment.
  2. Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON): SON is responsible for ensuring that products sold in Nigeria meet specified standards of quality, safety, and performance. They conduct product testing, certification, and inspection, and they also educate consumers about the importance of purchasing certified products to safeguard their health and safety.
  3. National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC): NAFDAC regulates the manufacture, importation, distribution, advertisement, and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, and chemicals in Nigeria. They ensure that these products meet safety and quality standards, conduct public awareness campaigns on health-related issues, and empower consumers to make informed choices about the products they use.

Disadvantages of Impulsive Buying

  1. Impulsive buying can lead to overspending and financial strain, as individuals may purchase items they don't need or can't afford.
  2. Impulse purchases often result in buyer's remorse when the excitement wears off, leading to feelings of regret or guilt.
  3. Buying impulsively contributes to clutter and waste, as unused or unwanted items accumulate, impacting both personal space and the environment.
  4. Impulse buying may result in choosing products of lower quality or suitability, as individuals make hasty decisions without thorough consideration.
  5. Impulsive purchases can disrupt budgeting plans and financial goals, making it harder to save or invest money in more meaningful ways.
  6. Continual impulse buying can lead to the accumulation of debt, especially if purchases are made using credit cards or loans, with interest accruing over time.
