DEVELOPMENT OF POLITICAL PARTIES IN NIGERIA(NPC and NEPU)

FORMATION OF NORTHERN PEOPLE’S CONGRESS (NPC)

Just like Action Group, NPC also started as a cultural organization in the north called “Jamiyyar Muranem Arewa” meaning the Association of Northern People which was formed in October, 1948 and NPC became a political party in 1951. NPC was basically an Hausa/Fula I party which has Islam as its main focus, ruled the North between 1951-1965.

Sir Tafawa Balewa was the deputy and NPC produced Nigeria’s first Prime Minister.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF NPC.

  1. The party worked to make the Northern Nigeria an autonomous society.
  2. Worked at educating the Northerners on their political rights; how to vote, why and who to vote for etc.
  3. To create an atmosphere for common understanding (unity, love) among Nigerians.

  1. To develop the North, economically and politically.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF NPC.

  1. NPC controlled the administration Northern Nigeria between 1951-1966.
  2. It helped to establish the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zarin.
  3. The party produced the first Prime Minister; Sir Tafawa Balewa.
  4. The party claimed membership of over 10,000 in 76 branches in the July, 1952 annual convention.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY NPC.

  1. The party was a REGIONALISED AND FEUDALISTIC PARTY: The party was restricted to Northern Nigeria. Northerners established and Northern only, national unity was not promoted. The party was conservative holding unto the autocratic emirs and the British colonial rulers.
  2. It’s leadership was not open-minded and so refused changes even when the development was available.
  3. The party(NPC) was slow in introducing mass formal education like the other regions of the federation.
  4. The party was formed to protect the interest of th4 Northern region and so never pretended to be a National Political Party.

SOURCES OF FINANCE.

  1. Annual subscription of 12 shillings.
  2. Levy of special purposes.
  3. Individuals made donations.
  4. The party made it mandatory for legislators who are members of the party to contribute 5% of their salaried to the party.

NORTHERN ELEMENTS PROGRESSIVE UNION (UMBC).

FORMATION OF NEPU.

NEPU was a minority party which was formed to represent and protect certain special minority interests. NEPU sought to cater for all poor in Nigeria and not for the Northern Talakawa (poor).

Aminu Kano, a young Hausa/Fulani teacher was not satisfied with NPC’s conservative and unequal Northern Social System, broke away and formed NEPU on the 8th of August, 1950.

The party’s(NEPU) singular purpose was to overturn the system and put political and economic power in the hands of the poor, oppressed and wretched.

OBJECTIVES OF NEPU

  1. To impose a new type of social structure on the society.
  2. Create a radical reform of political and judicial institution of the society.
  3. To use universal adult franchise(for men and women) in all local authorities wherever the location.
  4. To create a better North through provision of health facilities, construction of more schools; provide oversea scholarship.

LEADERSHIP OF THE PARTY.

Leaders were mainly recruited from the lowest group of the middle-class.

The 3 sources of leadership are; the Native Authority; School teachers and Koranic Mallams.

The party leader was Aminu Kano and was and ex-school teacher. The leadership of the party consisted of those who protested/stood against the unequal social and economic system in the North.
