HISTORY OF PARALYMPIC GAMES
The Paralympic Games, are a major international multi-sport event involving athletes with a range of disabilities. These include physical disabilities, such as those resulting from spinal cord injuries, amputations, and visual impairments, as well as intellectual disabilities.
History and Evolution
The Paralympic Games originated from the Stoke Mandeville Games, first held in 1948 for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. The official Paralympic Games began in 1960 in Rome.
The Paralympics occur every four years, following the Olympic Games. They include both Summer and Winter Games, similar to the Olympics.The event has grown significantly in terms of participation and recognition, featuring athletes from over 100 countries in recent editions.
Organization and Governance
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) oversees the organization of the Games, working closely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other sports federations.
Sports and Competitions
The Paralympics feature a wide range of sports, including athletics, swimming, wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, para-cycling, and more. The Winter Paralympics include sports like para alpine skiing, para ice hockey, and wheelchair curling.
