SPORTS GOVERNING BODIES-FIFA

Sports governing bodies are organizations that oversee and regulate specific sports. Examples include:

  1. FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) - governs soccer/football globally.
  2. IOC (International Olympic Committee) - governs the Olympic Games.
  3. IAAF(International Association of Athletics Federations) - governs athletics.
  4. FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball) - governs basketball.
  5. ICC (International Cricket Council) - governs cricket.
  6. WADA(World Anti-Doping Agency) - oversees anti-doping in sports.

Fédération Internationale de Football Association, FIFA

FIFA, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, is the international governing body for soccer (known as football outside North America). It was founded in 1904 and is responsible for overseeing international competitions, including the FIFA World Cup, which is one of the most popular and watched sporting events worldwide.

Structure of FIFA

FIFA’s structure consists of several key components:

  1. Congress:

   - The supreme legislative body of FIFA.

   - Comprises all member associations, each having one vote.

   - Meets annually to discuss and decide on major issues, including election of the president and amendments to statutes.

  1. Executive Committee:

   - Acts as the main decision-making body between congresses.

   - Composed of the FIFA President, several vice-presidents, and members elected by the Congress.

   - Oversees the implementation of policies and strategies.

   - The head of FIFA and its public face.

   - Elected by the FIFA Congress for a four-year term.

   - Represents FIFA globally and manages its operations.

  1. General Secretariat:

   - Handles FIFA's day-to-day administration.

   - Led by the Secretary General, appointed by the Executive Committee.

   - Manages various departments and executes decisions made by the Congress and Executive Committee.

Functions of FIFA

FIFA has a wide range of functions, including:

  1. Sets and enforces the rules of the game (Laws of the Game).
  2. Develops and implements policies to promote fair play and integrity.
  3. Organizes major international tournaments like the FIFA World Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup, and youth competitions.
