NOTE

THE ADVANTAGES OF NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME

a.) It guarantees workers continued and unrestricted access to health care services irrespective of their work status.

b.) It gives equal opportunity to all people to have health care services whether rich or poor.

c.) It facilitates better care services as providers of doctors in private and public hospital, pharmacists, nurses who have to improve their skills in order to cope with the attendant challenges of NHIS.

d.) Patients will no longer have to travel far to see a doctor because both the private and public hospitals will be involved in the scheme.

e.) The employers will have a healthier work force with a considerable reduction in workers absenteeism.

f.) It will provide employment for a large number of people who will be directly or indirectly involved in the scheme.

g.) It will increase the lifespan of an average Nigerian.

DISADVANTAGES OF NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME

a.) Due to increase in the number of patients to be treated, the health facilities may be inadequate for them to receive adequate attention in hospitals.

b.) Epileptic power supply by PHCN will always hamper diagnostic test x-ray and laboratory tests required to facilitate doctor’s diagnosis of an illness.

c.) There may be a considerable reduction in worker’s take home pay because of the employer’s deductions of money to the scheme from the worker’s monthly or weekly wage.
