INTER-ETHNIC RIVALRY AND THE ISSUES F THE CREAION OF STATES
Inter- ethnic rivalry in Nigeria dated back to the period of colonialism. This occurred during various constitution conferences attended by different ethnic groups that constitute present day Nigeria.

The inter -ethnic rivalry emanates from fear of domination by one ethnic group.

SECESSION

Secession is the conscious withdrawal of a group from a larger entity especially a political entity but also from any organization, union or military alliance.

Secession is also a breakaway from an organization, country etc.

 

CAUSES OF SECESSION

  1. Marginalization and neglect
  2. Fair share of resources and infrastructure.
  3. Discrimination
  4. Intimidation: larger groups intimidate minor groups.
  5. Threat to life and property.
  6. Insecurity and minority issues
  7. Indigent/settlers dichotomy.

 

PROBLEMS OF SECESSION

  1. Question by a group for self rule
  2. Political party in power being intolerant of a particular group.
  3. Incorrect census figures.
  4. Struggle over dominance and power by different groups.
  5. Lack of inadequate provision of infrastructure and amenities.
  6. Activities of groups like; Boko-haram, MASSOB-Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra.
  7. Tribalism and ethnicity exhibited by leaders.
  8. Lopsidedness nature of political division. -19 Northern states.

 

POSITIVE EFFECTS OF SECESSION

  1. Having a feeling of satisfaction.
  2. Working harder to succeed.
  3. Increased opportunity for employment.
  1. Gives room for more people to be involved in politics.
  2. Equity will be operated to a very good level.
  3. Prevents civil war.
  4. Tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

 

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SECESSION

  1. Natural capabilities is missed.
  2. Hostilities against other groups or group that seceded.
  3. Inter and intra marriage and relationship will be strained.
  4. It breeds distrust and suspicion.
  5. Economy is destroyed.
  6. It affects all facets of the society.
  7. Loss of investments.
  8. Loss of strength; population, military, sports etc.
  9. Instability in the nation.

 

Suggestions /Measures to Avoid Succession in Nigeria

The only way out to cut the pressure of succession in Nigeria is creation of more states thereby increasing regions to sub- regions.
