NOTE

THE HEALTH CARE SERVICES COVERED BY NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME

a.) Preventive health services-it covers the provision of immunization to children, pre-natal and post-natal care services, and family planning advisory services.

b.) Curative care services which cover provision of simple curative drugs, x-ray and laboratory services.

c.) It also covers maternity services for woman having up to four live births and for insured persons only.

d.) It covers simple eye tests but does not cover the provision of eye glasses.

e.) It covers consultation fees with doctors and specialists in hospitals.

f.) It covers patient’s admission fees in a public or private hospital for the first twenty-one days of admission.

OBJECTIVES OF NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME

  1. To make health care delivery services more efficient
  2. To give every citizen an opportunity to benefit from the pool of contributions into the health fund by giving him/her equal opportunity to medical treatment in health care institutions.
  3. To make health care services to be universal in all health care institutions across the country
  4. To make health care services affordable to the people.
  5. To bring about considerable improvement on the health status of the people. This is possible because health care services will be provided from the health insurance fund. People will no longer run away from hospitals or the doctor refusing to treat a patient for lack of funds.
